A locked door buys more time than any tool in your hand. If someone tries your door at 2 a.m., what matters in order is whether the door holds, whether light and sound make you a bad target, and only then what you have ready inside. You can cover all three without a firearm and without breaking a lease.
Quick answer: Start with the door. Put 3 inch screws into the stud and a longer strike plate, or a bar or wedge where you cannot drill. Add a motion light and a loud signal. Stage spray only where it is legal and only for outdoor use.

Make the door hard to open
Most break ins are door failures. The screws holding the strike plate pull out of soft jamb wood or the hollow frame splits.
Three fixes that fit a rental:
3 inch screws. Swap two screws on each hinge and two on the strike plate for 3 inch #9 screws that bite the stud behind the jamb. Bag the originals to restore when you move.
A longer strike plate. A 4 to 6 inch plate with four holes spreads load across more jamb and more stud. If you cannot screw into the frame, use the bar.
A bar or wedge when you cannot drill. A floor to knob bar wedges under the handle and into the floor. A rubber wedge with an alarm adds friction and sound. Neither modifies the door.
A patio slider needs a track block, a cut dowel in the track. Burglars pick dark and quiet. You can flip both without wiring.

Bear spray, pepper spray, and the indoor problem
Pepper sprays are the most talked about non firearm option and the most misunderstood indoors.
Range is not what the can prints. Most bear sprays list 20 to 35 feet, an outdoor cone in still air. Indoors that cone bounces off walls and hangs in the room you shelter in. A narrow stream reaches 10 to 12 feet with less fog, but still fills a small flat quickly. Effects are pain, tearing, and coughing. Real, not instant, and not reliable at high tolerance.
Stage, do not carry. Put one can high where kids cannot reach, near the core room exit, and practice the safety cold. Using it indoors likely means everyone in the flat breathes it too.
Law. In the UK any pepper or bear spray is prohibited under Section 5 of the Firearms Act. You cannot keep it at home. In the US it is legal to own in all states but carry rules vary by city. Some cap strength or size. Check your city before buying and never carry spray on a plane.

Pepperball and household tools
CO2 pepperball launchers throw irritant 40 to 60 feet outdoors. Indoors a miss puts powder into the air and every shot needs gas and cleaning. For most flats the trade is poor.
Forums cite a hammer or bat because you own them already and no law touches them. They are contact tools with no range. If you stage one, keep a single household tool where you spend time and drill moving to the core door, not toward the threat. A bat does not fix a weak door.
