Water Storage for Apartments and Renters (No Garage, No Pantry)

No garage, no pantry. How renters store two weeks of water in closets and under beds, rotate it fresh, and cover dishes, pets and laundry in a small kitchen.

Most water storage advice assumes a garage. A wall of jugs, a shelf of buckets, a hose to the driveway. If you rent a one-bedroom, none of that exists. You have a closet, the space under the bed, maybe a hall cupboard.

You can still store two weeks of water there. It just lives in four places instead of one. One person needs two 7-gallon jugs plus a kitchen jug for drinking and cooking over 14 days. Two people need four jugs across a closet and under a bed. The jug that fits that spread is the Reliance Aqua-Tainer 7 Gallon Water Container because it slides into a closet sideways and pours without lifting, and a Sawyer Squeeze Water Filtration System plus Aquatabs 49mg Water Purification Tablets (30 Pack) handles the next source when stored water runs low.

How much to store

Plan about 2 gallons per person per day if you want to stay clean. The often-repeated 1 gallon covers drinking and cooking only. The second gallon covers hands, dishes, and sponge baths.

Household Drinking and cooking Drinking plus hygiene
1 adult, 14 days 14 gal 28 gal
2 adults, 14 days 28 gal 56 gal
1 adult plus medium dog 14 plus 7 gal 28 plus 7 gal

A single person hits the drinking column with two 7-gallon jugs. A couple needs four. A 40-pound dog drinks about half a gallon a day, a cat about a cup to a pint. If you cannot fit the full hygiene column, store drinking as hard jugs and plan hygiene as filtered refill. The full table and bleach math lives in our real two-week water budget.

Water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon. One full 7-gallon jug is about 58 pounds, four is 233. Spread that across the floor, never on a high shelf, and out of direct sun.

Where it fits with no garage

Measure before you buy.

Bedroom closet floor: two Aqua-Tainers behind hanging clothes, about 14 gallons, on 15.5 by 12 inches each. They slide beside shoe racks without blocking the door. Tape the fill date to the cap.

Under the bed: the best hidden volume in a small apartment. Most frames clear 7 to 14 inches at the lowest slat. An Aqua-Tainer is 10 inches on its side, so it fits most frames. Low flat 3.5-gallon water bricks are about 6 inches high and fit under even lower frames. One jug per side, or two bricks, adds 7 to 14 gallons nobody sees.

Hall closet: one jug or two bricks on the bottom shelf. If the door is narrow, bricks win because they are 9 by 12 inches and stack like books. Do not stack more than two high.

Kitchen: one jug by the fridge as the rotation jug. Drink from it, cook from it, refill on schedule. It proves the spigot works before you need it.

That layout gets a one-bedroom to 28 to 42 gallons without a garage. Keep jugs off heat vents, off sun, and never on a balcony. Sun grows algae, heat degrades plastic, freezing cracks seams, and a frozen filter cartridge is dead.

Which containers fit an apartment

The workhorse is the Reliance Aqua-Tainer 7 gallon. BPA free, spigot you can use without lifting, stacks two high, fits a closet sideways, about $17. Its weakness is height under very low beds where 10 inches is too tall.

The flat alternative is the 3.5-gallon water brick at 9 by 12 by 6 inches. It slides under beds that defeat Aqua-Tainers, costs more per gallon at about $25 per brick, but turns dead space into storage.

Skip milk jugs and thin grocery jugs. The plastic is thin, the seal is poor, and residue is hard to clean. A 2-liter soda bottle with a screw cap is sturdier in a pinch, but replace it with a proper jug.

Tap water stores as is. If you fill from an untrusted source, filter and add tablets before it goes into clean storage. Never pour untreated river water into a clean jug and plan to treat later.

Rotation without the chore

Tap water keeps about 6 months before taste fades. Tie rotation to something you already do, like smoke detector checks at each clock change. Label every jug with fill date and source on painter tape. You do not need to dump 28 gallons at once.

Run a rolling cycle. Drink and cook from jug one for a week until empty, refill it, move to jug two next month. That turns rotation into kitchen use instead of waste. A strip of Aquatabs keeps for years and weighs nothing. One tablet treats 1 to 2 liters in 30 minutes, EPA and NSF certified.

Dishes, hygiene and laundry

Running the tap to rinse one plate is how you burn a jug before dinner.

Dishes: two small basins. Basin one, an inch of soapy water, scrub. Basin two, clean rinse water, quick dip and rack to dry. About a quart for a meal for two instead of a gallon. Wipe greasy pans with a paper towel first.

Sponge baths: heat a quart, mix to warm in the basin, wash hands and face, then sponge down with the same water. A full shower burns 15 to 25 gallons. A sponge bath uses half a gallon.

Toilet: pour a gallon into the bowl to flush, or use a bucket and liner setup that saves flush water. See our emergency toilet without water. Keep flush water in a marked jug so it never competes with drinking water.

Laundry: plan to not do it for two weeks. Hand wash socks and underwear in a basin with a few drops of soap, wring well, hang on the shower rod. Two people can manage every two to three days in about 2 gallons if gray water flushes the toilet.

Pets

A dog that drinks a quart a day needs 7 gallons over two weeks. A cat needs roughly half that on dry food. Fill a lidded bowl from the daily jug and keep pets from untreated toilet water. Our emergency pet kit covers the carrier and ID side.

The water stack that makes river water drinkable gives the filter plus tablet order that turns silty water clear. The food and water storage guide and emergency water sources in your home pair with the storage here.

One Reliance Aqua-Tainer 7 Gallon Water Container in the closet this weekend, one under the bed on the next run, the kitchen jug in rotation after that. Two weeks of water in an apartment is four jugs and a habit, not a renovation.
