Day 5 Without Power: What Actually Mattered, Costed and Weighed
By day 5 without power the small gaps get expensive. Here is what held, what failed, and the true cost and weight of every fix that actually mattered.
By day 5 the novelty is gone. Fridge on day 1, water on day 2, then keeping phones alive and food safe. This is that timeline, priced and weighed so you can judge what earns space in your closet.
A 245Wh station plus a folding panel covered the essentials, a small fan made sleep possible, and a thermometer saved more food than any cooler. The balcony solar did nothing after the grid dropped, and a half tank of gas saved half a day.
Hour 0: what failed first
Power cut at 2:14 p.m. on a Thursday in late August. No storm, just a substation fault. Lights out, router dead, fridge quiet.
The first hour shows what you actually prepared:
- Phones at 60 to 80 percent. No charged power bank within reach.
- Fridge at 38F. Closed, it buys about four hours before dairy leaves the safe zone.
- No flashlight where you could find it. Candles in the drawer are not the same.
- The balcony microinverter quit within 90 seconds. Grid-tied building solar without a battery is a bill reducer, not backup.
Light where the person is fixed hour 0. A headlamp would have beaten any lantern, but even the small radio on the shelf kept the search going. The Midland ER310 Emergency Radio found the breaker, the station, and the thermometer with its built-in light. About $70, under a pound, NOAA on 162.550 MHz when cell data thinned.
Day 1: food and cold
Day 1 is the fridge. Every opening costs cold. One person opens, grabs everything for the next meal, closes. A wireless thermometer ends the guessing. Fridge 36 to 40F is safe, freezer 0F or below is safe. Above 40F for more than two hours, cook or toss. We did not open the freezer until dinner. Fridge 41F by 9 p.m., freezer 12F. We ate fridge first, cold beans and bread that night.
The EcoFlow RIVER 3 Portable Power Station is 245Wh, about 7.8 lb, about $199 off sale. It cannot run a fridge through the night. A 120W fridge cycles near 35 percent, so average draw is about 42W. On 245Wh you get four to five hours of compressor time, roughly half a day in a real kitchen. We spent it on three phone charges and the thermometer base, then saved the rest. Day 2: water and the half-tank rule
City water stayed on but pressure sagged. We treated it as a warning. Tub filled for flushing, two 7-gallon jugs for drinking, one basin to wash and one to rinse. About half a gallon per person to stay clean without a shower.
Weight teaches fast. Water is 8.34 pounds per gallon. Two full 7-gallon jugs are about 117 pounds. You do not carry them far, you fill them before you need to. We had them because the water budget article pushed us to buy two. Without them day 2 would have been a store run, and the stores had lines.
The half-tank rule proved itself. The car was just over half. A neighbor on a quarter spent day 2 in a gas line that did not move because pumps have no power either. Half a tank is not about range. It is about skipping the worst line. Fill at half, always.
Day 3: comms, heat, and the recharge window
Day 3 is when morale cracks. Phones at 30 percent, router dead since hour 0, cell data in bursts. The only steady info was the weather radio, twice a day for fifteen minutes. The Midland runs for days and recharges from the station over USB. The crank is backup, not a plan.
Heat was the other problem. Third floor, late August, 86F inside, worse at night with no air movement. The AMACOOL 10 Inch Foldable Rechargeable Oscillating Fan changed sleep. Sleep went from impossible to merely warm.
Phones recharged on schedule: one at lunch, one at dinner, to 80 percent. The EF EcoFlow 110W Portable Solar Panel earned its keep here. About $169, 7.3 lb folded, IP68. Ideal sun pushes 80 to 90W real. In haze at a low angle it did 35 to 50W on our rail. At 40W it takes about six hours to refill the station. On day 3 we had four hours and recovered about 60 percent, enough for fan and two phones. Building solar gave zero. Same word, different machine. The core system is about 19.7 lb and fits in one duffel. Full retail near $508, often 15 to 20 percent less on sale.
Day 5: keep, cut, or add
Power returned at 8:40 p.m. on day 5. Routine by then: check temps, charge in the sun window, keep one room cool at night, radio at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
What actually mattered, by how often we reached for it:
- Light and info first. Radio plus a headlamp would have covered hour 0.
- Fridge thermometer. Ended the safe-or-toss debate, stopped door opening.
- Fan. Heat breaks sleep and sleep breaks decisions. A 5W fan is not luxury.
- Station plus panel as a pair. Either alone is half a system.
- Half tank and jugs filled early. Habits, not gear, beat any last-minute run.
What mattered less than expected: a big cooler, extra canned food, the bucket toilet. The fridge, managed well, carried us. What we added after: a dual-fuel butane stove and a headlamp, moved to the same closet so the system is one grab.
