If you drive in winter, one number decides most crashes: speed. On packed snow, cut your speed to about half your normal limit; on ice, take it down to a quarter. Ice stretches stopping distance to roughly 9 to 10 times what you get on dry pavement, so you may pass the point where braking matters before you even spot the problem. This guide covers tires, skid recovery, and what keeps you alive if you end up stuck.

Winter crashes aren't drivers behaving badly. Roughly one in four weather-related crashes in the US happens on snow, slush, or ice, and most are single-vehicle slide-offs. Grip disappears, the wheels lock or spin, and physics takes over. Plan for that before the temperature drops.

Speed: The Only Lever You Can Pull Fast

The discipline is setting your speed before you need it. A comfortable 70 mph on a summer interstate is a different animal at 35 mph in a snow squall. Two rules cover most situations:

  • Snow: about half your normal speed, and slower again in turns and on hills.
  • Ice: about a quarter of normal speed, and near zero through shaded corners at dawn.
  • Following distance: six to ten seconds in snow, against the usual three in dry weather. Pick a landmark the car ahead passes and count.

Tires Beat 4WD Every Time

  • Winter tires beat all-seasons below about 45°F. The rubber stays pliable in cold; all-season compounds harden and lose grip. Independent track tests show winter tires stopping roughly 20 to 30% shorter than all-seasons on snow. If you buy one piece of winter gear, this is it.
  • AWD and 4WD help you go, not stop or steer. They add traction to the drive wheels, which helps you accelerate and climb. They don't shorten stopping distance and they don't help in a curve. Some of the worst single-car winter crashes are AWD vehicles driven at speeds their tires couldn't handle.
  • Check tread before the season. Below about 4/32 inch in the outer grooves, wet and snowy grip falls off fast. The penny test is the daily check; 4/32 is the winter one.

The 5-Minute Pre-Drive Check

Before any trip when snow is forecast, five minutes covers most failures:

  • Clear the whole roof. A ridge of roof snow slides forward and onto the windshield when you brake or turn, and it can blind you at speed. Clear every window, the roof, the hood, the lights, and the plates, not just a peephole.
  • Run on a full tank. A cold car burns about double its normal fuel on short trips, and that fuel is your heat source if you're stuck. Start trips full.
  • Set cold tire pressure. Pressure drops about 1 psi per 10°F, so a pressure that was fine in October reads low in January. Fill to the door-sticker number while the tires are cold. Braking and Skids: What Actually Works

  • With ABS: press the brake firmly and keep it pressed. The system pulses for you; pumping wastes the advantage and lengthens the stop. Steer while braking on ice, that's the whole point of ABS.
  • Without ABS: use threshold braking. Press until the wheels are about to lock, ease off a hair, and repeat.
  • Understeer (the front slides and the car keeps going straight when you turn): let off the gas and steer further into the turn, toward where you want to go. The tires have no more grip to give, so don't grab the wheel harder.
  • Oversteer (the rear slides out, the classic fishtail): turn the wheel in the direction the rear is sliding, which is also the direction you want the nose to point. Steer into the skid, then straighten as the car lines up.
  • Don't hit the gas to power out. More throttle usually makes the spin worse. Coast and steer.

Black Ice: Where It Hides

Black ice is ice you can't see, and it costs most of its victims on two types of road: bridges and overpasses, and shaded curves.

  • Bridges and overpasses freeze first and stay icy longest. The deck loses heat from both sides, so it runs several degrees colder than the roadway. If it's at or below freezing and the road ahead looks wet, suspect ice.
  • Shaded spots and dawn. Ice lingers longest where the sun doesn't reach, which is why it's worst early in the morning and on the north side of hills.
  • The invisible warning sign. At around 31°F, traffic ahead slowing for no visible reason is usually slowing for ice. Match their pace.

If You Get Stuck: Stay With the Car

The move that feels least productive is usually right: stay put. The car is shelter, and rescuers look for the car, not the person walking through a whiteout.

  • Run the engine about 10 minutes per hour for heat. Clear the snow from the tailpipe first, every single time. Carbon monoxide is the silent killer here; a blocked exhaust pipes it straight into the cabin. Crack a downwind window an inch while the engine runs.
  • Make yourself visible. Tie a bright cloth to the antenna or door handle, keep the dome light on, and use flares behind the car if you have them. Call for help, then stay put.
